The so-called 'e-Gates' will provide automated passport validation and security checks on passengers.
They work by using advanced facial recognition technology and electronically checking the authenticity of biometric passports.
Initially, 20 e-Gates will be installed at Dublin Airport and will be fully operational before the end of the year.
Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan said the introduction of the e-Gates will greatly enhance immigration controls and border security, while at the same time providing an improved passenger experience through the immigration process.
During the first phase of the project, Irish and other EU travellers over 18 with e-Passports and holders of the Irish Passport Card will be able to use the e-Gates.
