From today, laws changed in Northern Ireland and the Republic to give effect to a road safety agreement signed between the Irish and UK governments in 2015.
Those who receive a driving ban on the other side of the border from where they live will have the prohibition extended to their home jurisdiction.
Minister for Transport Shane Ross said: "The mutual recognition of driving disqualifications is an important road safety measure because it aims to target dangerous drivers on our roads."

He said "the disqualifications relate to drivers disqualified for reckless or dangerous driving, hit-and-run driving, and driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs".
