CIARÁN KILKENNY has backed his Dublin manager, Jim Gavin, for standing by suspended star Diarmuid Connolly.
Gavin's weekend intervention - to condemn the broadcast media's coverage of the incident that led to a 12-week ban for Connolly - has reignited the entire controversy.
But Kilkenny reckons the Sky Blues boss was right to back his player. "It’s a duty of care as a manager to look after and protect your players, and that’s his responsibility as a manager," the All Star forward commented.
However, Kilkenny said he was "oblivious" to the latest controversy as it was erupting last Sunday. The 31-point destroyers of Westmeath declined to engage in one-on-one interviews with the broadcast media while Gavin went on the attack against The Sunday Game and Sky Sports.
"You wouldn't be knowing what's going on in the background. We're just focused on playing and focused on our preparation and our training and recovery," he explained. "You put so much time into your actual training sessions that, outside that, you want to do other things. Go to the cinema. Play a bit of pitch and putt."
